A study of the modern family unit, with the protagonist Harry Silver attempting yet again a delicate balancing act. This time his son Pat is growing up too fast, along with many unanswered questions about Harry's own father which are brought to the surface when a war buddy of his father shows up unexpectedly one night, in frail health. The book plays out through the last few months of the school term, where we witness his son mature and his ex wife return to claim her entitlement as Pat's real mother.The book feels almost too slight in places; one minute we are dealing with Harry and his son's issues at school, and before we know it a couple of poor remarks between Harry and his current wife Cyd result in the "are we breaking up?" question. Really, is that all it takes? I would think a good 25 extra pages of build up would have helped here!
Another feeling I had was that the laughs came too little and infrequent; I'm basing this on the first books in the series which had a heavy emphasis on the comedic. Men From The Boys is more drama based, with the odd lighter moments thrown in. In my view this one felt just a bit too rushed and, on balance, a little too lightweight.

If you enjoyed reading the previous two books of this trilogy, 'Man and Boy' and 'Man and Wife', you certaily will like this one.
I have read the whole series of tony parsons books from Man and Boy till this one and I always feel like im catching up with an old friend.
He writes so well and catches the imagination with his style, if you have never read his books start with man and Boy and you will be hooked
